welcome!

Welcome to the fam, y'all! I am SO excited you're here! Being engaged is SUCH a special time in your lives— I'm so excited for all that's to come for you! Know that this guide will be your BEST FRIEND as you plan and prepare for your big day and will also help you maximize your wedding photography experience with me! I'm so EXCITED to pour into your wedding day planning to help ease the stress of planning. As always, feel free to reach out at any time if you have any questions along the way!

caity@caitkramer.com

Meet my fam!

I'm excited for you to meet the people closest to me! (from left to right, you'll meet Luna, Sean, Meg, Tom, my Dad, my Mom + me!) Though we live all over the country now, my sister and I in Baltimore, MD, and my brother and parents in TX, they are the people that inspire me daily to live a life that I love. I like to pretend their pups are my own, even though I now have a sweet pup of my own! Click the arrow buttons to meet Luna and Sophie— Luna is a Basset/Lab mix living in Baltimore + Sophie is a black lab living in Texas!

I'm a barre instructor!

I usually live in leggings! I have worked as a fitness instructor for nearly a decade, teaching a variety of classes— barre, OTF, dance cardio, muscle and strength conditioning, HIIT, cycling, you name it! If I could encourage a first-time runner to make it through a mile or a newbie weightlifter to make it through their first thigh section, I can certainly help you survive your wedding day family portraits without dimming your grin! I'm currently teaching a few times a week at The Bar Method, and I absolutely LOVE what I do!

GET TO KNOW Me

Hi, I'm Caity, though you already know that! Here are a few things you may not know about me:

I love my Rescue pup!

I welcomed my sweet Addie home in January 2023! She's an American Staffy mix who loves tummy rub and treats. She is my partner in crime in the office and is the absolute sweetest thing! While she keeps me company most days, she won't be joining you on your wedding day or engagement session (sorry!!). BUT, with that being said, know I love dogs and would absolutely love to have your pup involved in your wedding day or engagement session. If you have questions, let me know, and I can share the BEST way to make it happen (safely, of course!).

A little theme music...

As a group fitness instructor, former dancer, AND former musician, music is a huge part of my life. There's nothing better than finding THE perfect song that is just right for the moment!

I wanted to share a few fun and upbeat tunes with you to help accompany your wedding planning process. Tune in to the playlist through the embedded link to the right or open + save to your Spotify account!

Be sure to find me on your dance floor if September or I Wanna Dance With Somebody are played at your reception— they're my favorites!

MY WHY

Being asked to photograph your wedding is truly such an incredible honor. Thank you so much for trusting me with capturing so many special memories and moments. This is such a joyful and EXCITING time in your life— I cannot WAIT to celebrate with you two + your favorite people! That said, I totally understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. I’m here to walk you through every step of your photography experience, from making you feel confident in front of my camera with constant direction, all the way to helping you craft the perfect wedding timeline, and finally packaging your beautiful images in heirloom prints and albums. At the end of the day, planning can be so fun, but the really awesome part is that you’ll officially be MARRIED so soon. I love celebrating this season with you because family and family legacy is truly at the root of everything that I do. I do not take photographing one of your first family heirlooms lightly which is why I have worked so hard to craft a wedding experience for my couples that is both joyful and organized, yielding images that you will love and an experience that you will treasure forever. I hope that you know that I am here to encourage you as you journey towards marriage and prepare for your wedding day!

My favorite part of each Wedding day

The First Look

I'm not sure if there is ANYTHING sweeter than someone seeing their spouse-to-be for the very first time on their wedding day! Shock, awe, tears, giggles, butt pinches, a simple embrace... there's no right or wrong way to experience a first look. I find so much joy in witnessing couples seeing each other for the first time and always look forward to experiencing what kind of reaction my couples may have to their first look.

Still feeling torn on a first look?
We'll chat more about them soon!

Couple's Portraits

Oh boy... I hope you are EXCITED to explore and giggle and enjoy each other's company on your wedding day! Couple's portraits are one of my favorite times of the day because you actually get to slow down and breathe without anyone else around you. Your engagement session will come flooding right back to you + you'll instantly feel like a posing pro. Couple's portraits are when I'm able to produce some of my best work— think those canvas-worthy images for your home!

As a bonus, be sure to schedule some extra married portraits at sunset! You will not regret these glowy images!

Your engagement session

I include a complimentary engagement session with your wedding experience because, other than us having a TON of fun together, the time is also incredibly valuable! This truly is a vital part of your entire wedding experience. Think of this as the cake tasting of the wedding photography world... During your session, you'll have a chance to get to know me while experiencing how I work and handle posing. You get a feel for being in front of the camera while I get to know what you are like in front of the camera! Your engagement session makes a huge impact on how your wedding day flows because I'll already know how you two interact, what your best poses are, and how to genuinely photograph who you are as a couple! And, of course, you'll also feel like such a posing pro on your wedding day because of the practice you had at your engagement session!

I normally suggest scheduling your engagement session 2-6 months in advance. Because my weekends are filled with weddings, I photograph engagement sessions on weekday mornings and evenings. We'll coordinate the exact timing, based on the location + season.

To start engagement session planning, I recommend brainstorming locations. I love when couples pick a location that is special to them in some way, but if you can't think of anywhere specific, I can help you decide! I have a quick list of beautiful, go-to locations on hand. With that being said, as long as the light is great, I can make pretty much any location look awesome! I often work at manor homes, farms, gardens, campuses, city streets, downtown alleys, and even homes... so please do not shy away from any idea that may feel a little crazy!

EMPTY YOUR POCKETS

Yup, quite literally! Before your session, be sure to check your pockets for phones, wallets, keys, and other items. More often than not, you will be able to see them through your clothing. If you ever need to stash anything, I always bring a bag with me just in case you need to keep anything close but out of frame!

CLEAN YOUR RING(s)

Your ring(s) will definitely be photographed a few times during your engagement session! I recommend getting your ring(s) professionally cleaned prior to your engagement session. If you run out of time, my sister loves this cleaner for cleaning her engagement ring at home.

BE BOLD!

From accessories to patterns, you have permission to do it up! Most bold patterns actually photograph pretty well. That said, I recommend avoiding tiny, repeating patterns and graphics. Feel free to have fun with accessories! Think about adding a statement like a necklace, scarf, jacket or cardigan.

ADD A TIME BUFFER

Know that I strategically schedule all of my engagement sessions in the 2 hours after sunrise or two hours before sunset for the best and most flattering light. Be sure to plan a little buffer around your departure to ensure you'll be able to arrive to your session on time. This will maximize our time together!

COMFORT IS KEY

I chat ALL about this in your engagement session style guide (Click here for access!), but know that comfort is KEY to confidence. Without feeling comfortable in your clothes, there is no way you'll ever be able to feel like yourself in front of the camera— Opt for pieces that feel as good as they look!

Let's be honest...

Even if it's a photo on a phone taken by a friend, it can feel intimidating to have your picture taken. I realize prepping for your session can feel overwhelming, but know there is no way you can mess this up. I'll teach you everything you need to know, and we'll have lots of fun along the way. Still feeling nervous? Send me a note!

HOW TO SCHEDULE

Because my weekends are dedicated to weddings, I typically only schedule engagement sessions on weekdays. Our start time is completely based on the sunrise or sunset time for the time of year you're considering! Send me a note, and we'll start planning your engagement session right away!

WHAT TO WEAR

If you are choosing to wear two outfits, consider splitting it: one dressy and one casual. Feel free to go all out for your dressy outfit, and think "date night" for your casual outfit! My biggest piece of advice is to wear outfits that COMPLEMENT each other, not match. More style tips and outfit ideas here!

what's included

Our session will last 1.5 hours, includes one to two locations, and up to two outfits. We'll have so much fun exploring your location(s) and getting to know each other all while capturing some beautiful images of you two! Expect to receive your final gallery within 4 weeks of your engagement session.

WHAT TO EXPECT

If you're like 99% of my couples, this is probably the first time you've ever been in front of the camera for an extended period of time as a couple! It is totally normal to be nervous, but I want to let you know, you are not alone! This is a normal feeling... in fact, even I still get a little nervous when I'm having my own photos done!

It's COMPLETELY normal to feel this way, but I want to encourage you to just relax and have a good time. I'm going to be giving you all the direction, so you'll always have something to do. We're going to capture those timeless photos that everyone loves, while getting a little goofy and having fun. Some prompts I give you both might seem a little silly at first, but TRUST ME, they create total magic.

All you two have to do is show up and be an adorable couple in love... easy, right?! I'll take care of the rest. We're going to have a lot of FUN!

ENGAGEMENT SESSION LOGISTICS

I typically plan your start time based on sunrise or sunset time. If you are late, it cuts into the gorgeous, flattering sunlight we have available! I want you to look your best, so be sure to arrive on time, if not a few minutes early.

Have a pup? Just know I adore ALL the cute pups, so if you want to bring them along, do it! (Just let me know ahead of time!) The best way to include them is to have someone else bring your dog during the first or last 15 minutes of your session, or choose a session location that is super close to your home. Want to learn more about bringing your pup? Read this blog post or send me an email!

As much as I wish we could hit a million gorgeous locations during your session, I recommend focusing in on your favorite 1-2 locations within 15 minute of each other. Any more than that, and the travel will start to feel incredibly overwhelming.

Though sunrise sessions may be early, the light is WORTH IT! There are select locations that I do require sunrise sessions for, primarily sessions on DC's National Mall or other locations that are typically very crowded throughout the day.

If you like a manicure, be sure your nails are freshly painted. Chipped nails will be noticeable in your photos. Neutral colors, pastels, and clean unpainted (but groomed) nails photograph beautifully and will match any outfit!

If you're wearing heels or uncomfortable dress shoes, bring a pair of flip flops, slippers, or comfortable shoes to walk from spot to spot. Your feet will thank me later!

engagement sessions by the season

SPRING

Dreaming of blooms, gorgeous glow-y light + soft pastel outfit color palettes? Spring may be the PERFECT season for your engagement session! Though the light varies a lot throughout the season, you can expect to start morning sessions around 6:30AM and evening sessions around 5:30PM. I'll be in touch with the exact meeting time once we settle on a location! Remember: Spring is often chillier than you may realize! Bring along a jacket and some warm shoes, just in case.

SUMMER

If you love late sunsets, long flowing grass, and warm temps, summertime may just be the best season for your engagement session. We'll settle on an exact meeting time for your session, but typically, the above listed times are pretty spot on for sessions between June and August! Be mindful: summertime is HOT, and bringing along a water bottle and sweat towel is totally normal and highly recommended to help keep you feeling your best.

JUNE-AUGUST
6:30-8:00AM | 7:00-8:30PM

FALL

Fall colors, pumpkin spice, chillier temps... these are all the things that make fall SO special! Keep in mind, we move towards the end of Daylight Savings Time during the fall which means gradually, sunset occurs a little earlier! We'll coordinate an exact meeting time prior to your session. Though I can't guarantee that we'll have FULL fall foliage, I can promise you that, if we do find a gorgeous fall tree, we'll maximize it to ensure you have those gorgeous, fall inspired images!

WINTER

For the most part, sunset is a little earlier during the winter, and sunrise is a little later. That said, we'll coordinate the perfect meeting time, not to worry! Before you totally rule out a winter session, know they can be SO much fun and so gorgeous at the same time. For the most part, we have more locations all to ourselves, the light is still glow-y + gorgeous, and you'll get to snuggle tight to keep each other warm. Be sure to bring along a blanket, coat + warm shoes for in between photos!

CHOOSING OUTFITS

I know you probably have A LOT of questions about what to wear for your engagement session! That's why I've created an entirely separate guide to BEST help you out! To help with information overload, I recommend reviewing your wedding guide (AKA this page!) first and reviewing your engagement session style guide when you are ready to start styling your engagement session outfits.

From picking pieces to coordinating outfits, real talk on comfort, my favorite stores and more...

camera shy?

If you or your partner are feeling a little anxious about being in front of the camera, you're not alone. Let me just clarify one thing up top: you are both more photogenic than you think! I am constantly surprising couples by discovering their hidden modeling skills. I promise, you can do this! And if it is any reassurance, I often hear people that were previously camera shy say, "that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... it was actually a lot of fun!!!" at the end of their session. I want your session to be both fun and relaxed, not forced or awkward.

As you move towards your session, there are a few things you can do to prepare. First, I recommend sitting down with your partner and viewing 2-3 of your favorite engagement sessions that I have photographed. Spend time scrolling through a few posts on my blog, so you both know what to expect on the day of your engagement session. I also recommend allowing for plenty of time to get to your session. Give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes as a buffer, just in case.

Last but not least, be patient with each other! There is truly no way you can mess up your engagement session. Relax, enjoy each other's company, and plan a little something fun for after your session. You deserve some quality time together as a couple!

Your wedding day!

We've made it through chatting about all things engagement sessions! Now, we're going to dive deep into planning the MAGIC of your wedding day! We'll walk through your entire experience.

Hang tight, take each section one by one, and jot down notes as needed. I can't wait to help inspire your DREAM wedding day! Have a question? Send me an email

I have had the opportunity to work with many incredible wedding planners, from day-of coordinators to full service planners. They can provide help for your wedding day in a way that no one else can. They also give me the opportunity to solely focus on taking your beautiful photos while they keep the timeline going throughout the day! There are typically many different types of services planners offer, so here are a few to consider for different aspects of planning.

Some planners offer the option of helping you with "vendor match-making." They will sit down with you and ask you what you're looking for in your different vendors, and offer the best suggestions within your budget. They'll help you seek out incredible value while ensuring your vendors are the perfect fit for your vision! Plus, you'll have a dream team that will be amazing for your wedding!

Many planners also offer day-of styling services in addition to planning. This means they will be in charge of setting up your spaces and wedding day design. They'll add a beautiful, creative touch and since they've worked alongside you up to your wedding day, they can carry out your vision perfectly. This also means your parents or VIPs won't be running around trying to set everything up—
their team has you covered!

If you are not interested in a full-service planner, this is the BEST thing you can do for your wedding! It is so crucial to have someone running your day. Your day-of coordinator will act as a go-to person the day of that can take care of the logistics and answer questions. Without them? This responsibility typically falls on your parents, wedding party, or photographer. (Which BTW, I am always more than happy to help out with logistics here and there! That said, having a day-of coordinator makes EVERYONE'S life easier, so I can focus on photographing your day!) Coordinators are there to run the day and make sure everything goes smoothly. This often also includes planning the month before your wedding. Once that pre-determined mark hits, they will take over and conquer the last minute planning details for you. What a stress reliever!

If you want wedding planning and wedding day to be as stress-free as possible, this is the route to go! A full-service planner will be there from your engagement all the way until the end of your wedding day. They are there to take care of all the planning for you, so you can relax and enjoy being engaged. They work alongside you to create the perfect vision for your wedding day, help you choose vendors, create your timeline, work out the logistics, and everything else that goes into planning. They basically become your best friend during the process, because just about everything is off your plate! Plus, most packages include day-of coordination and event execution, making your planning process + wedding day stress-free and enjoyable! Think of full-wedding planning as your all-in-one!

Yes, a good planner is an investment, but it is one that will be worth every penny!

Know the Difference

Benefits of a Day-of Coordinator vs. Full Service Planning

My biggest piece of advice in this area is to, at the very least, have a go-to person— ideally a planner or day-of coordinator. If you don't have one appointed person, those responsibilities are going to fall on someone else. Whoever ends up taking over the logistical things that pop up the day-of, they won't be able to enjoy the day or focus solely on their job. Sometimes your venue will provide a day-of coordinator, but make sure they will be there the whole day and are there to actively help YOU as a couple! Keep in mind: venue coordinators are amazing, but often they are just there to ensure the venue fulfills their contracted obligations. If your package includes a venue coordinator, I would also check in to see what their role and responsibility will be throughout your day. If they are there to oversee the day + execution on the venue side, amazing, but you may need someone to help coordinate the FULL logistics of your wedding day, from getting decor set up according to timeline, to helping everyone get down the aisle, ensuring transportation is on time, and more. Day-of logistics coordination is worth its weight in GOLD!

If you're okay with this go-to person being a loved one, then go for it! But realize that they aren't going to be able to fully enjoy your day, so you'll BOTH have to be okay with that. Know that wedding day logistics often bring surprises + move quickly. Day-of coordinators and planners are specifically trained and experienced on seamlessly dealing with any last minute pivots. Bringing someone else in isn't as much as you'd think, and it takes so much stress off everyone. They can also be a really good middle man when sticky situations come up throughout the wedding day. Trust me, you won't regret it!

LET'S CHAT TIMELINE!

Phew... take a breath. I know this part of wedding planning can be intimidating! This may not be the most exciting aspect of planning your wedding day, but I can promise, setting up a timeline that will allow you to enjoy your day is probably THE most important thing you can do to set yourself up for a wedding day that you'll love. I'll connect with you about three-five months out from your wedding day to begin the planning process.

If you keep scrolling, you'll find sample timelines. While these can be GREAT, what's most important to note is the amount of time each event typically requires. For the most part, I recommend the following: Details: 45 Minutes | Getting Dressed: 45 Minutes | First Look and Portraits: 30-45 Minutes | Wedding Party: 30-40 Minutes | Family Portraits: 30-40 Minutes | Extra Portrait Time: As much as you'll give me (But at least 30 minutes!)

If you are going to be traveling to multiple locations on your wedding day, you'll want to allocate for plenty of time to travel. I recommend looking up the travel time on a GPS + then multiplying the time by 1.5 (so, if you have 30 minutes of expected travel per GPS, you'll want to allow 45 total minutes for travel). This ensures traffic jams + other surprise issues that could pop up while on the road are a non-issue while giving you plenty of time to get set up for travel.

Every wedding day is different which is why I'm often hesitant to share a sample timeline with wedding planning couples. What you are dreaming of may be totally different than what's listed below. Note that the below timeline is planned for a mid summer wedding with a later sunset, and an outdoor, 30-minute ceremony. We'll chat about planning portrait time for each season in the next section. Use the following timeline as a bit of inspiration to see how your day could unfold, but not as a rule.

SUMMER WEDDING WITH A FIRST LOOK

The CKP Team will arrive to photograph your details (more on these soon!!) and those pretty "finishing touches" photos. If you're having hair & makeup done, this can include the final sweep of lipstick or spritz of hairspray.

Thinking of getting matching shirts, slippers, robes, or PJs?! We'll want to set aside a few minutes to grab some fun photos of you with your VIPs! From there, your crew will get into their day-of attire ahead of you and your partner getting dressed.

It's time! I'll stay with one of you while my second photographer goes to your partner for their getting dressed photos. We'll document you putting the finishing touches on your outfit, along with any jewelry, accessories, and shoes.

We'll chat more about these later, but I like to recommend sharing a first look with a parent(s) or wedding party if you are close! If you do want to share a first look, we'll want to make sure this is on the timeline, but this is not a "required" part of the timeline by any means.

Transition time is key! We'll leave a few minutes here and there to allow us to coordinate the next event. In this case, we'll be working to get you and your spouse-to-be in position for your first look.

This is YOUR time! I can't stress that enough. Whether your first look takes five seconds or five minutes, know that whatever time you need is perfect with me! From there, we'll transition right into taking some GORGEOUS photos of you two as a couple.

During wedding party portraits, we'll work to photograph a combo of images. Typically, we'll photograph your entire crew, which means everyone together, you with your VIPs and your partner with theirs, as well as you with each VIP individually. If you want any other combos, please let me know in advance.

I love when couples share a first look and can take their family photos pre-ceremony! This gives you all dedicated time during cocktail hour to celebrate. Instead of posing for the camera, your family can enjoy post-ceremony time however they may like. We'll start coordinating your family portrait list about two months out from your wedding day. I'll run family portrait time off this very list!

Guests will always start to trickle in a little early. For that reason, I recommend having at least thirty minutes set aside to relax and breathe pre-ceremony. During this time, I'll photograph as many of your event details as I can, as well as guest arrival. Bonus points if your reception space can be totally ready by this time, too!

YOUR CEREMONY IS HERE!! You've been waiting for this moment for SO long. I want to encourage you to take a breath, to relax, and to enjoy every moment. It will FLY by, but will be so special. I'll see you on the other side of your I Do's!

Once you have recessed, shared hugs with your family and wedding party, and have had a moment to officially be married, I'll snag you for a few just married portraits! I typically try to keep these to fifteen or twenty minutes so you'll be able to enjoy more of cocktail hour.

If we don't have anything "scheduled" for cocktail hour (i.e. structured portraits), me and my team will split our time between photographing your event details and cocktail hour. You are free to enjoy cocktail hour as you would like! Be sure to allocate a few moments for bustling if someone is wearing a gown. Other than that, the sky is the limit. Eat dinner, enjoy cocktail hour, tuck away for some alone time. You can truly spend this time however you may like!

It's party time! I'll begin to let some more of the coordinating roles fall to your venue and catering coordinators, as well as your DJ or band. When it comes to planning the timing of this portion of the day, we'll typically do that a few weeks out. I recommend syncing up with your coordinator/planning team, entertainment vendor, and caterer. Often your reception will begin with entrances and introductions as well as a first dance with your new spouse! That said, this is your wedding day. To plan your reception timeline, I'll need the estimated length of your dinner service as well as the events and traditions you would like to see happen throughout the night.

This timeline is modeled for a summer wedding, but I love to sneak you two off for a few minutes of glow-y sunset portraits, no matter the season! I promise, you won't regret taking ten or fifteen minutes from dinner/your reception for these gorgeous photos!

About fifteen minutes out from my departure, I'll find you + your brand new spouse for goodbyes and any other image requests you may have. Once my departure time hits, my team will pack up and leave as you continue to celebrate!

This is the time we'll keep on hand to ensure no one crosses paths! We'll swap out key people during this time.

Because your individual sides are done, we'll focus on the big group! We'll grab a few different group combos before sending your wedding party off to enjoy cocktail hour.

You are MARRIED!!!! We'll spend about twenty minutes photographing some gorgeous photos of you two to document the occasion. Your engagement session will come flooding right back to you!

Winter

Though cold, winter weddings are gorgeous, they take a little extra planning because of the sunset time. The most challenging part of a winter timeline is the fact that the sun sets between 4:00-5:00PM. This means that all of your portraits need to be done before then. This isn't a problem if you are planning an afternoon wedding. However, if you are planning a late evening wedding, you may have a bit of post-portrait, pre-ceremony downtime. You may also need more coverage time. I would absolutely suggest a first look for all winter couples.

Spring

Spring weddings are wonderful because they are often the perfect temperature! That said, be sure to have plenty of allergy meds on hand, just in case you start to flare up during portrait time. Spring weddings often mean the potential for some blooms! If I happen to find any kind of blooming tree or plant, we'll do our best to stop by for some portraits— the end result is SO worth it! When it comes to timing for spring portraits, they'll really vary. As you move through the season, the sunset time gradually becomes later, allowing for more flexibility.

Portrait timing by the season

Believe it or not, the season of your wedding will determine a lot of your timeline! Let's break down how this looks for portraits in winter, spring, summer + fall.

Summer

Summer might be my favorite season for weddings because we'll have SO much daylight! In some months, we'll have light until 8:30PM! If you are having a summer wedding, be sure to have a few minutes to slip out of your reception for sunset portraits. You will not regret this! This is the absolute best light of the day, and you'll love the portraits taken during this time period. Do keep in mind, summer weddings are often a little warmer, so as gross as it sounds, be sure to have some spray on deodorant, a sweat towel + some water available, just in case! This will help you feel your freshest AND your best.

Fall

Fall weddings are STUNNING! I love the crisp temperatures and colors! Most of my fall couples worry about foliage color... I just want to encourage you: all I need is ONE tree with some color in order to make it look like fall! A little color can go a long way. Portrait time will vary, depending on your wedding date— the light changes a lot during this season! Keep in mind, we'll lose light little by little, as we progress through the calendar. We'll touch base on this as we work to finalize your timeline together.

getting ready

It is the morning of your wedding day and hopefully all of the little details have been taken care of! If certain items haven't been taken care of, hand them off— delegation at this point is key! Let's run through some key points to help your day run smoothly:

If you're trying to decide where to get ready, this is HUGE! I always recommend opting for spaces with lots of windows and white or neutral walls. When it's time to get dressed, I will likely direct you to a clean area that has lots of natural light coming in!

Please have all of your details gathered before I arrive. My biggest recommendation is to put them all in one box or bag so they are all in one place. This ensures that I am able to get right to work when I arrive, and no one has to run around looking for specific items. Should they be a part of your big day, this should include:
All rings  |  A Copy of Your Invitation Suite  Jewelry  Shoes   Dress / Suit | Wedding Party Outfits | Special Hangers
Veil Hair Pieces  |  Perfume / Cologne  | Bouquet / Boutonnière | Heirlooms | & Anything Else you want photographed!

Please have your florist deliver your bouquet and/or boutonnières BEFORE I am scheduled to arrive. This ensures they will be included with all of the other pretty details! If the florist is also able to include a few floral and greenery clippings with your order, that would be so helpful and gorgeous for your detail photos.

This is just a bonus tip here, but purchasing a velvet ring box in your wedding colors will help to personalize your details! My favorite places to buy them are from TheFamilyJoolz and The Mrs. Box.

If you are choosing to exchange gifts with your spouse-to-be the morning of your wedding day, take a second BEFORE your wedding day to pre-coordinate the process. Who will be delivering the gifts and would you like the moment they open their gift to be photographed? Letting me + your videographer (if you choose to hire one!) know your plan in advance is super helpful and allows us to help coordinate the process or seamlessly capture some sweet and meaningful images.

Your wedding party, parents, and/or anyone else you want to help you get dressed should be ready AT LEAST ten minutes before your scheduled dressing time— put this on your timeline. This ensures they can be included in these special photos! As they get ready, be sure to refrain from putting on your accessories, jewelry, tie, and/or shoes. I'll photograph you placing your accessories and finishing touches just after you get dressed. We'll just need to make sure all items are in your getting ready space.

I would encourage you to have hair and makeup scheduled to be done around thirty minutes before you're scheduled to get dressed. This gives you some buffer time, just in case it runs behind!

If you are choosing to incorporate other first looks (think: a first look with a parent, other important people in your life, wedding party, etc.) the morning of your wedding day, we'll definitely want to get these on your timeline! These are such a sweet way to start your wedding day celebration.

Day-of Reminders AND TIMING TIPS

Can you tell this point is an important one? Just another reminder to have your detail items ready before I arrive. This will maximize your wedding coverage time and will allow me to get right to work!

Don't be afraid to include extra elements in your details, from ring boxes to antique trays, floral clippings, and more. If you are thinking about adding something to your box, go ahead and toss it in! I may not use EVERYTHING, but each little detail can really help add something special to your photos. When you coordinate your floral delivery, ask your florist if they could include a few extra scraps or clippings with your order. Oftentimes, these scraps are just discarded during the assembly process! That said, they make a great addition to your detail photos. Florals and a bit of greenery can really add a pretty pop to your detail photos.

I promise, my team will take great care of your rings! Please include all rings (engagement & wedding bands) in your wedding detail box. We'll coordinate a ring hand-off once your detail photos are taken! Typically, this will happen after getting ready or during wedding party photos.

Please have your bouquets and/or boutonnieres delivered to the bridal suite before your first look, ideally before I begin your detail photos! You'll want your blooms included in the portraits that happen earlier in the day. We'll do our best to keep your florals in water and AC as much as possible throughout the day to keep them looking fresh.

Designate a VIP to be your "cleaner-upper" throughout the morning! This person will ensure your space is tidy, making things feel less overwhelming and cluttered, and ensuring my team doesn't need to do a five-minute tidy when we arrive to make the space photo-ready. I also recommend bringing along a few large trash bags (because we all know how small hotel trash cans are) and a suitcase to be a catch-all throughout the day for gifts, clothing, and other items you may pick up.

There's regular time, and then there is wedding day time! Wedding day time moves FAST. I recommend placing a ten-minute buffer in your timeline every now and then to ensure breathing or catch-up room as needed. Sometimes the simplest things can take an extra twenty minutes! If you don't end up needing the buffer time, you can always use the time for extra photos or for a moment or two to soak in your wedding day. Either way, this time will not go to waste– promise!

If hair & makeup is part of getting ready, I encourage the marrier(s) to go first (or close to the middle) of your hair & makeup timeline. Oftentimes, HMU Artists will recommend marriers go last in the chair to ensure you are at your freshest. While I don't doubt their expertise, keep in mind: HMU is at the very beginning of the day, and if it runs off timeline, it could throw off your entire day! No one wants to feel stressed as you fall behind in the chair. If you go first (or nearly first!) on the timeline, you'll be ready when it's time to step into your outfit. You can always get a fresh touchup of lipstick or powder if needed! I recommend having someone go last that is not needed for getting ready portraits.

Just a little encouragement amongst all of the tips and tricks: I know this is a lot. It can feel like a lot to coordinate, and it can be easy to hold ourselves to perfect standards. Take a breath, friend. Things won't always go as planned on your wedding day, and guess what? That is totally OKAY! In a few years, the mishaps will be funny memories, and in the moment? I can guarantee you that you'll have a crew there to take care of you!

If I'm photographing a bride and groom, typically we have the bride get ready first since there are more details. Let's talk specifically about grooms! If you are getting ready at the same location, my second photographer will go hang out with the guys about ten minutes into the bridal getting ready time. If you are getting ready at different locations, please let me know, and we will coordinate these logistics accordingly. When my second photographer does arrive, I recommend having the groomsmen fully ready for the day (including shoes and ties) and the groom ready in pretty much everything but his jacket, shoes, and tie. My second photographer will take some getting ready portraits of the groom as well as some detail photos! See below for my recommended detail list for the guys (note: they may not choose to incorporate every piece, and that is okay! There is no need to buy anything, just for photos):
Tie | Tie Clip | Boutonniere | Cufflinks | Watch | Shoes | Socks (especially if they're fun!) | Belt/Suspenders | Cologne Pocket Square | Fancy Alcohol or Beverage

Veil options

Since most of my couples opt to share a first look, know you have so many options if you are choosing to wear a veil! I often recommend that you begin wearing your veil just before you walk down the aisle for a few reasons: 1. This is something totally new for your partner to see when you're walking down the aisle! 2. Many times, your excited hugs during the first look will pull the veil out, and 3. Your "just married" portraits will include your veil! Saving your veil for later in the day will give you more variety in your final gallery. This isn't a hard and fast "rule" but it is a fun suggestion to help keep your hair looking its best while adding variety to your gallery. PS for those gorgeous "veil blowing in the wind shots," I recommend a long veil with light to minimal details around the edges!

The bouquet

Let's be honest– there are SO many expenses when it comes to wedding planning. Many couples need to prioritize where they are choosing to invest. If you are having trouble making a decision about florals, I recommend going BIG on your bouquet. When I am photographing a wedding that has a gorgeous bouquet, I can make it look like there were beautiful florals everywhere! I can use your bouquet to spruce up and add variety in getting ready details, reception details, and even during portraits as well! Your bouquet will be with you for SO much of the day, it'll become a big focal point for me in your photography. I highly recommend getting your DREAM bouquet and investing less on bouquets for your VIPs because they will not be photographed nearly as much.

A few notes on veils and blooms

FIRST LOOKS

There is no pressure to do one, however, there are SO many benefits and reasons why many of my couples do opt for one

So you might be asking... what is a first look?! Simply put, a first look is when the couple arrange a private time to see each other before their ceremony. The only people present will be the two of you and your photographers/videographers! First looks are popular amongst my couples for many reasons. There are so many incredible benefits of doing one!

Although I love first looks so much on a wedding day, I also always encourage my couples to do whatever they want to do. Because at the end of the day, it’s their wedding, and what they prefer matters the most. I want your day to go however you envision it. This next section is meant to help you decide whether a first look is right for you, and why I recommend them so much!

Benefits of a First Look

Throughout the chaos of a wedding day, your first look will very likely be your ONLY alone time! It allows you to have a chance to talk and enjoy hanging out with each other. You get to TELL your partner how great they look as soon as you see them! You get to extend your day TOGETHER by 2-3 hours.

Your only alone time

Marriers receiving HMU love this because hair and make up is totally fresh for all of your portraits. You don't have to worry about touching up before photos because you just had your hair and makeup done! Your VIPs will LOVE you for this as well because wedding party photos will be earlier.

With a first look, you can ENJOY taking all of your wedding portraits while not feeling rushed. Plus, you'll receive MORE variety in your portraits because of the extra time! It makes taking photos a lot more enjoyable because you aren't trying to squeeze them all in!

Fresh hair and makeup

More portraits in your final gallery

You can finish the majority of your wedding photos before the ceremony begins. We will jump right into couple's portraits + wedding party photos after the first look! This means no long cocktail hours with guests waiting on us to finish taking photos— what a win!

Logistically, it's a dream!

Once we wrap up family portraits directly after the ceremony, you can actually go enjoy cocktail hour or start the reception! If any of your VIPs aren't family members, they get to enjoy ALL of cocktail hour! They will be so grateful!

So many couples say their nerves turned to excitement after they see each other! It helps you to feel more relaxed and makes your ceremony more enjoyable. Plus, you’ll probably remember your ceremony better because you weren’t so nervous. The whole thing will feel like a blur otherwise!

You can enjoy cocktail hour

It diminishes nerves

FROM GROOM, ZAK:
I think there can be unnecessary pressure put on grooms to react a certain way when they see their partner walk down the aisle. When I found out we could see each other before the wedding, talk, and she could see my reaction without all eyes on me, I was all for it. I liked being able to tell Lindsey how beautiful she looked and share some alone time before the day really got started.

Talk to your fiancé and figure out what is most important to you. We wanted more time to celebrate with our families and friends without having to worry about a strict timeline–the first look was the only option for us.

FROM GROOM, RYAN:
The biggest benefit for me was taking the anticipation of seeing the bride from a public scenario to a private one. No drawbacks for me, as I personally felt that there was a huge weight off of my shoulders before the actual ceremony, getting to physically talk to her before the ceremony started. We were able to share the entire day more because we were together earlier.

I highly recommend that grooms do it because I know how I felt prior to the first look, and I know how I felt afterward, and I truly couldn’t imagine feeling that pent-up anticipation waiting for her to walk down the aisle. It’s such a weight lifted off your shoulders, and I was able to enjoy the moment more.

FROM BRIDE, KAIT:
It’s so amazing to actually have a moment on that day where it’s just the two of you. It’s so special and intimate to see each other for the first time without all of your guests staring at you. Also, Dan had such an amazing reaction and I love that it was captured forever…. You’ll be so much less stressed and be able to enjoy your ceremony even more! Plus, you’ll get a lot of time to react to how AMAZING you both look! Also, it’s a more honest reaction when it’s the two of you rather than in front of hundreds of guests.

Walking down the aisle was still just as amazing as I thought it would be. I was still walked down by my dad and Dan was still waiting at the end of it. Except I felt less nervous because we had already spent some time together that day during our first look and prior to the ceremony. It’s still magical to look down the aisle and see your future husband, even if you’ve already seen each other. For us, I think it made it more special.

DON'T JUST TAKE IT FROM ME...
HEAR FROM SOME OF MY PAST COUPLES:

If you're close with your parent(s), a first look with them can be a really sweet addition to your day. It gives them the opportunity to see you and your look before everything gets crazy, and is a special time for you to connect. These easily become one of my FAVORITE parts from past weddings because they are so emotional and sweet. You'll be surprised at how emotional your parent may get when they sees you for the first time. If you want this in your timeline, let me know so we can add in an extra 10 minutes to make this happen!

A first look with wedding party has become one of my favorite things on wedding days too!! Especially if most of your VIPs haven't seen your outfit yet, it's the perfect way to show it to them and to capture their priceless reactions at the same time. It typically only takes about 10 minutes during the getting ready portion of the day. The only challenge is making sure everyone is dressed and put together before you are, so good communication with your party is a must if you want to add this into your timeline!

PARENT FIRST LOOK

WEDDING PARTY FIRST LOOK

YOUR WEDDING PARTY

I know from experience that all of my couples want their closest people to have an amazing time on their wedding day— I'll do everything I can to make that happen! Wedding party portraits should be a ton of fun. After you share your first look, depending on locations and timing, your VIPs will join us for portraits! If it goes well, we'll be able to accomplish ALL your wedding party portraits before the ceremony, meaning your people will be free to mingle during cocktail hour. Be sure to have them arrive with boutonnieres on and/or with bouquets that have been dried off!

all about

ceremonies

Lighting

Ceremony light is very important. I suggest planning an outdoor ceremony to start 2 hours before sunset if you are sharing a first look. If you are not sharing a first look, I suggest having your ceremony start 3 hours before sunset to ensure you'll have plenty of portrait time. I also recommend having the sun behind you OR having your ceremony in full shade. Always look for even light, even if you are having an indoor ceremony! If there are two spotlights on the couples, it'll be hard to photograph your wedding party with you! It is better to have soft, even light across your entire altar, inside or outside.

order of service

I have seen so many amazing traditions during ceremonies! The options are truly limitless. As you plan your ceremony, be sure to design it to be exactly as you envision it, without the pressure of including items or other events that aren't important to you. This is your day, so if you have the freedom to be creative, be creative! Know you can always keep things short and sweet... especially if that feels right to you as a couple! If you are planning any surprises, all I ask is that I'm kept in the loop, so I'll be ready. Feel free to send me a private email or text!

Ceremony Planning

The moment you've been waiting so long for! While details do matter and planning is necessary, it is also important to never lose sight of the real purpose of your wedding day. Cherish this time— it will fly by!

Coordination

Hiring a full event planner or a day-of coordinator is key— we chatted about this already! That said, during your ceremony, their services are SO valuable. If you don't have someone to coordinate your day, timing the processional will fall to parents, wedding party, the photographer, or to the COUPLE! Talk about stressful... If you are not able to hire anyone, I recommend asking a trustworthy and timely family member or friend to help you out. Timing the processional perfectly is a lot of pressure. Most of my stressful wedding situations were caused by a lack of coordination. It is important to make this a priority as you plan. Let me know if you need any coordinator recommendations!

If you’re not familiar with unplugged ceremonies, an unplugged ceremony is essentially when you request that your guests turn off all of their devices for the ceremony. This allows your photo/video team to work more freely without the risk of getting guest technology in their photos! Plus, you'll be able to see the faces of your family and friends instead of the backs of their phones.

I think unplugged ceremonies are a GREAT idea, and I’ve had many of my couples do them with amazing success! Guests are typically very respectful if you ask them to refrain from taking photos during the ceremony, and it will reflect in your photos. This especially shows in the wider shots; you’ll either see a lot of guests holding their phones up for photos, or your guests sitting and enjoying the moment.

To make this happen at your ceremony, I recommend first having a sign at the entrance of the ceremony that encourages guests to put away their devices. You can also include a short and sweet line on your ceremony program that requests that no one has their devices out. In addition, request your officiant to announce your unplugged ceremony a few minutes before the ceremony starts, to reenforce what they’ve already read!

This makes life a lot less stressful for me and for your videography team, yes, but a beautiful thing happens: your guests are sitting and enjoying the moment you two are married, instead of staring at their screens. What a beautiful way to encourage your guests to unplug for a short amount of time to enjoy such a special moment with the two of you!

FAMILY Portraits

About two months out from your wedding, I will send you your online wedding questionnaire. This is where we'll begin planning your family portrait groupings. From there, I'll send you an online list for you to complete with everyone's names! I cannot tell you how helpful this will be day-of— I'll read right off the list. I do ask that the list is no longer than 15-20 groupings and that the time be reserved for immediate family only (anything past that we can grab at the reception!) Here is an example shot list to get you started:

Couple with extended family: recommended for reception time, if desired

Sunset portraits are literally the BEST 10-15 minutes of portraits you'll get on your wedding day. Typically, we'll sneak out for a few minutes during your reception (in between events, of course!) or right after family portraits to grab a few of these! Trust me, they are WORTH IT and are those dreamy, swoon-worthy photos you see all over Pinterest with the glow-y, warm lighting.

They also give you another chance to slow down and connect with each other, away from the chaos of your big day!

Here are a few things to know:
- Bring your veil + bouquet! They both will look AMAZING with sunset lighting!
- If it ends up being overcast, don't worry! I've had SO MANY overcast and rainy weddings end up having a beautiful sunset. If the sun isn't peaking out, we might still sneak out for some extra portraits for variety!

sunset portraits

If there is one thing that I love and appreciate about my couples, it's that they trust me! Sometimes, I select portrait locations that might leave some people walking by, scratching their head... for example, the image with the pup was taken as my second photographer and I stood in a parking lot! There was nothing crazy special about the spot... the light was just even and beautiful + it was accessible to the couple's pup! My encouragement is to just trust me and my second photographer. I promise you will be thrilled with the results!

If you are planning a destination wedding day, chances are good that some of the details in this guide won't apply to you (or will be slightly different!) Your details, timeline, and prep for your wedding day will be much simpler. However, it is a good idea to start thinking about a few key components of the day such as timeline and tourist-free locations. Be sure to check the sunset time at your wedding location before setting your ceremony time. As your wedding day draws closer, we'll begin to chat about timelines + travel arrangements. Get excited!

DESTINATION WEDDINGS

RAINY WEDDING DAYS

It's like RA-IIII-AAIINNNN on your wedding day! (If you're not singing that one along with me... we gotta talk!)

One of the most COMMON questions I get asked is: what happens if it RAINS on my wedding day? While this isn't always ideal and doesn't match the sunny day you imagine while planning, I want to encourage you that you can still have GORGEOUS photos, even if it's rainy! Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind.

1. Overcast skies often mean amazing lighting. Sunlight, especially mid-day, is actually very harsh. Rainy days give that perfect, soft, natural lighting, no matter where you take your photos! This also gives you the ability to use a lot more locations, and tends to make colors look more vibrant. Don’t get me wrong, I love golden, sunlit photos, but overcast has its advantages as well.

2. Let me worry about the photos and locations. On your wedding, the only thing you should have to worry about is getting married!

3. Be willing to go outside! Most of the time when it’s raining, it’s a lot of light sprinkles and not long, huge downpours. Going outside is still definitely doable. I typically will find areas that have large trees to cover my couple & wedding party, or overhangs on the side of buildings. I also bring along clear umbrellas to a wedding day (enough for an ENTIRE wedding party) that keep you almost totally dry, even when you’re not under anything— And they look adorable! All photos I’ve ever taken outside in the rain hardly even LOOK like it’s raining.

4. Have a rain plan. Especially if you are having an outdoor wedding, this is very important! Be sure to coordinate a rain plan with your venue and reception vendors at the beginning of your wedding planning experience. Set a plan you LOVE well in advance. That way, if the situation arises, they will already know what to do and you won’t have to worry about a thing— you'll just have to tell them to put the plan in place!

5. Wait to track the weather... and then know I'll be tracking it all day long! We know how frequently weather reports change. Checking the weather nonstop before your wedding day is ONLY going to stress you out. I recommend waiting until about 2-3 days before your wedding day to check the forecast. You already have your rain plan in place, so there will be no need to plan anything additional. On your wedding day, I'll track the forecast using an app called DarkSky! I'll be able to see the precipitation forecast in real time to help make portrait time judgement calls. Worrying will only make it worse.

it's party time!

I hope you're ready to put on your dancing shoes!!! It's time to chat all things reception, and I can promise, this is going to be fun!

Remember: your reception should be fun, but in order to have fun in the moment, planning in advance is SO important. This is a combined effort between you, your coordinator, catering team, and your DJ/Band. Every aspect of your reception influences the overall outline of the evening. For example, if you're not having a plated meal, your reception will need to be set up in a way that allows for movement. If you are having a plated dinner, you will more than likely need escort cards, full place settings, and space for all guests to be seated comfortably. Whatever the style of your event, be sure to plan out all aspects of your evening. Your coordinator and DJ will be pros at helping you set up the evening so that guests won't leave early or experience long periods of waiting for the next thing to happen. If you have any questions, I'm also able to help here— I'll just need to know how long your catering team needs for dinner AND the traditions you want to include during your reception.

Much like your ceremony, you have total freedom to make your reception your own! It is your party, so do what you want. Here are a few key events that I often see at receptions. Please note, you don't have to include all or any of these events if you don't want to.

Wedding Party + Couple Introductions, First Dance, Parent Dances, Anniversary Dance, Dollar Dance, Traditional Religious Dances, Welcome by a Parent of the Couple, Blessing, Cake Cutting, Toasts, Bouquet/Garter Toss, College or Large Group Portraits with Friends, Exit of the Couple

GUEST CONSIDERATION: Take the demographic of your guests into consideration when planning your timeline. If you have a lot of older guests that will not be staying until the end of your reception, schedule cake cutting at a relatively early time so that they can be part of it. Grandparents love seeing this sweet tradition! If you have young kids attending, do make sure there are age-appropriate accommodations for them such as high chairs, kids meals, and activities.

KEEP IT MOVING: Chat with your coordinating team about how you can plan your reception in a way that will keep guests engaged, fed, and moving all night! If you don't have a coordinator, I am happy to offer a few tips and tricks– please let me know!

MAKE IT YOUR OWN: You can make your reception WHATEVER you want it to be! Don't feel tied to traditions here. Also, be sure to give your DJ or band a recommended list or "Do Not Play" list if there are songs you feel strongly about hearing (or not hearing!) at your reception.

EAT, EAT, EAT! You will be awake and moving from early in the morning, are hanging out with your favorite people, toasting a little bit of bubbly, and are riding on so much adrenaline. Food tends to be the last thing on your mind, but it is so important that you take a beat to EAT. I've seen some couples eat during cocktail hour before their reception even begins, so they can spend dinner mingling with tables. This option is best if you choose to share a first look! If you are not able to eat before your reception, be sure to block off some time to eat before you start mingling at tables.

RECEPTION COVERAGE: If you haven't purchased enough coverage time for your photography to last until your exit, that is okay! I have several recommendations: keep scrolling for one of them! Try planning your timeline so you can have at least 45-60 minutes of dancing photographed. The guests who dance during the first hour will most likely still be dancing late in the night.

RECEPTION EXIT OPTIONS

There are SO many options when it comes to exits. Sparklers, bubbles, glow sticks, rose petals... what to pick?! (And do you even pick anything?!)

If your coverage ends before your exit, know that you have the option of planning a "controlled" exit with your wedding party and family. This is more common than you might think. Instead of saving your exit until the very end of your reception, you can plan a controlled exit with just the members of your wedding party and your immediately family members. This allows us to have more control over the images, and the party never has to stop. In most cases, no one even notices that the couple is missing for a few minutes. Also, it’s almost impossible to tell that the whole wedding isn’t there waving sparklers and sending off the happy couple. This idea allows my couples to save money and still have all of the shots that they dreamed of. Some of the photos in the gallery you see here were actually controlled exits! Not feeling strongly about an exit? It's okay to skip it!

VENDOR GALLERIES

WEDDING ALBUM

WHAT'S NEXT?!

It's official!!! You are MARRIED! Your day went off without a hitch, your family and friends had such a joyous time celebrating, and you are officially walking hand in hand with your brand new SPOUSE! Now, when it comes to photography, what's next?

Once your wedding coverage wraps, you can expect to see a sneak peek the week after your wedding day on social media AND on the blog! From there, I'll be hard at work on your final gallery. You can expect to receive a link to your final gallery within 8 weeks after your wedding day. Questions about image download? Click here!

I will collect a list of your vendors as well as their contact details in your pre-wedding questionnaire. Once you are able to enjoy your gallery, I'll send your vendor team a gallery of curated images. This ensures your vendors are able to share the amazing work they did for your wedding. If you are not comfortable with this, please send me an email.

I would like each of my couples to have their wedding day printed in a physical, heirloom album. I want to make this as easy as possible for you which is why I include a complimentary design for each of my couples. We will do this through your online gallery a few months after you receive your images. It is totally optional (But encouraged!) to purchase.
